The Joy of Working with Children

Working with children can be a pleasure because they find it so much easier to engage their imaginations and are very willing to learn.

How Anxiety Affects Children

Many of the children I help struggle with anxiety, which can affect their feelings about school and impact their ability to make friends or feel a sense of belonging. Without the necessary support, anxiety can lead to withdrawal and even depression.

Unresolved anxiety can also increase the risk of self-harm, leading to behaviours such as cutting, hair-pulling, skin-picking, or developing unhealthy relationships with food, including bulimia or anorexia. It's crucial to address these behaviours quickly and help children develop tools to manage anxiety more effectively.

Common Issues Children Seek Help For
  • Anxiety and Stress: Managing feelings of worry and nervousness.

  • School-Related Issues: Improving focus, overcoming fear of school, and handling bullying.

  • Social Skills: Building confidence to make friends and develop social connections.

  • Bed-Wetting: Addressing nighttime accidents to build confidence for sleepovers and camps.

  • Sleep Problems: Overcoming insomnia, nightmares, and establishing healthy sleep patterns.

  • Phobias: Tackling specific fears, such as fear of the dark, animals, or heights.

  • Behavioural Issues: Improving conduct, managing anger, and reducing tantrums.

  • Self-Esteem: Building a positive self-image and boosting confidence.

  • Grief and Loss: Coping with the loss of a loved one or pet.

  • Eating Disorders: Addressing unhealthy relationships with food, such as bulimia or anorexia.

  • Habit Disorders: Helping with thumb-sucking, nail-biting, and hair-pulling.

Tools I Use

Through hypnotherapy and NLP, I help children overcome these and other challenging behaviours. These issues can cause significant stress and anxiety, particularly when children want to attend school camps or sleepovers. If you have any questions about getting help for your child, please contact me to set up a time to chat. I can better understand your situation and offer appropriate support. It's important that the child feels ready and willing to seek help.

Age Groups I Work With

Many parents wonder how young is too young to seek help. I have worked with children as young as four years old. For younger children, I create a story recorded as an MP3 that you can play for them at bedtime. Most of the children I work with are eight years or older, and we use hypnotherapy and NLP. For children up to the age of sixteen, I request that an adult be present in the room. This support helps the child feel secure and provides an opportunity for the adult to debrief and reinforce strategies after the session.

If you're interested in booking a session for your child, please contact me to discuss the best approach.

Clinics

I have two clinics: one in Petone and my main clinic in Wellington. I work weekdays, and we can schedule sessions outside school hours if that suits you best.
